Email Configuration Guide: Mac Mail version 4.4
This guide explains how to configure your Mac Mail version 4.4 (Included with Mac OS X 10.6) to access your email account.
This tutorial was created using Mac Mail version 4.4. If you are using different software version, these instructions may differ.
The domain example.com is used throughout this guide as a substitute for your domain name. If your domain is johnsmith.com, use johnsmith.com in place of example.com.
Configuration of your email client
The steps below can be used to set up email on your Mac Mail version 4.4.
1. Beginning the Account Setup.
Open Mail (If it's not on your Dock, you'll find it in the Applications folder).
2. If this is the first time you've opened Mail, the Welcome to Mail window will appear automatically (continue to step 3).
Otherwise, go to the File menu at the top left side of your screen and select Add Account...
3. Fill in your Full Name, Email Address and Password. If you need help with these, there's more detail underneath the screenshot. Press Continue after you finish.
- Full Name: your name as you wish it to appear on your outgoing email messages
- Address: your email address
- Password: your email password
4. Now fill in the Incoming Mail Server details. If you need help with these, there's more detail underneath the screenshot.
- Account Type: select either POP or IMAP from the dropdown list.
- Description: enter a useful description of the email address you're setting up (e.g. Mums email). You can put whatever you want here
- Incoming mail server: mail.your_domain
- User Name: your email account
- Password: your email account password
5. You may see a warning screen like the one below, click Continue.
6. Make sure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is unticked, Authentication is set to Password and click Continue.
7. Now fill in the Outgoing Mail Server details. If you need help with these, there's more detail underneath the screenshot. After you finish click Continue.
- Description: enter a useful description of the email address you're setting up (e.g. Mums email). You can put whatever you want here
- Outgoing mail server: mail.your_domain
- If you want to use authentication when sending mail, tick Use Authentication and fill in your Accountusername and password.
- User Name: your email account
- Password: your email account password
8. Make sure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is unticked, Authentication is set to None and click Continue.
9. You'll see a summary of the details you've just entered.
Your Mac Mail version 4.4 loads your incoming messages. You can now send and receive your email on your email client!
